NYSC year? Here's the insurance cover you actually need

A practical guide for corps members and their parents — what cover matters, what to skip, and how to keep it under ₦15,000 per year.

Every year, around 350,000 young Nigerians begin their National Youth Service Corps year — usually far from home, often in a state they've never lived in, on a stipend that doesn't leave much room for surprises.

Here's the cover that actually matters during NYSC, in order of importance:

  1. Personal accident cover. Cheap (₦3–5k/year), high impact. The biggest single risk for a corps member is an accident on the road.
  2. Health cover. NYSC provides basic medical at camp, but it tapers thereafter. A modest individual HMO closes the gap.
  3. Phone & gadget cover. If you bought a phone worth >₦200k, insure it.

Skip life cover, motor cover (unless you have a car at PPA), and any “NYSC-specific” combo product that bundles things you don't need.
